Because there are so many essential oils it can be difficult to know where to start. In this post I try to answer that question by giving you a breakdown of 10 must-have oils. This are the perfect essential oils for beginners.

I've included 3 of Kathi Keville's videos below, because she does a wonderful job of explaining the benefits of each essential oil. Kathi is well respected in Aromatherapy and I love the inspiring way she talks about the oils. There's also some great tips along the way, including a natural flea repellent for the animal lovers 🙂

Essential Oil For Biginners with Kathi Keville - 10 Great Starter Kit Oils

Part One - Lavender, Rosemary & Geranium

3 essential oils that we can use in body care. They can also have emotional support and health benefits;

Lavender is the most widely used essential oil because it's a very safe oil and one of the few that can be used undiluted and has many beneficial properties including relaxation, improving mood and healing burns and cuts, and of course has a wonderful aroma.

Rosemary is great for alleviating migraine headaches, I use it myself when I get a migraine mixed with some Peppermint and Lavender wonderful 🙂 Rosemary also improves brain function and memory, helps relieve stress and can be used to naturally thicken hair!

Geranium is frequently used as an anti-depressant and also has antiseptic and astringent properties. Geranium is one of my favourites for diffusing in my oil burner, I just love the aroma 🙂

Essential Oil For Biginners with Kathi Keville - Part Two

Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Bergamot & Citrus

You'll get the flea repellent tip I mentioned earlier in this one. And of course some more great beginners oils.

Eucalyptus is great for ..yes you guessed it.. cold and flu symptoms or easing allergies. Quick tip If your feeling bunged up, just put a few drops of Eucalyptus in some steaming hot water and inhale....ahhhh so good 🙂

Peppermint smells amazing and can help improve focus and boost energy levels, it's also used to alleviate fever and nausea symptoms. Peppermint is also a great oil for headache and muscle pain recipes.

Tea Tree is a natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and can also help stimulate the immune system. Great for getting rid of those pesky dog fleas or treating acne as well as minor cuts and abrasions.

Bergamot's wonderful aroma is used to refresh and balance the emotions making it useful for anxiety and de-stressing, a great oil for your oil burner 🙂 Bergamot also has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

Citrus oil properties include aphrodisiac, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, anti-spasmodic, anti-septic, anti-aging and anti-oxidant they also smell amazing, are energizing and can help to boost the spirits, great for Winter blues recipes!

Although I've already covered Citrus oils, I think Lemon deserves it's own spot because it's so good for using in homemade cleaning products. 🙂 The health benefits of lemon oil can be attributed to its stimulating, anti-infection, astringent, detoxifying, antiseptic and disinfectant properties.

Sweet Marjoram

Kathi talks about formulas for safe dilution & massage recipes in this final video, whilst taking us through our final essential oil.

Sweet Marjoram essential oil is used in Aromatherapy for soothing nerves.and providing an emotional uplift, another great oil for diffusing 🙂

  2. Hello, I have had an interest in getting a hold of some peppermint essential oil because my fiancé likes to use it to add to his nasal spray for added medicinal benefits. I don’t know if there’s one you would suggest that would work better for that?

    1. Hello Rae Anne, thanks for leaving a comment, actually your fiance is using an ideal oil for his nasal spray, the menthol that peppermint contains acts as an expectorant and Peppermint is often used to provide relief for sinus symptoms, as well as colds coughs, asthma and bronchitis. You could also use candle diffuses if you wanted, place your tealight in the bottom, fill the top with water and add about 10 drops of Peppermint oil to it, a great Peppermint aroma for you and some relief for your fiance. Also he can try steam inhalation, a few drops of Peppermint oil in hot water and a towel over the back of his head while he inhales the steam, should really help but make sure he has his eyes closed during the inhaling process so they are not affected by the oils.   3. Hi Trayce. Love what I’m learning here 🙂 I don’t know much about essential oils, but I am a bit of a natural remedies enthusiast, so this is very much of interest. I have a question for you. I often use tea tree oil topically (for both me and my horses!) as it really has amazing antibacterial properties. However you state that it can also be used to reduce bad odors. What would be the best way to do that? Or is there a different oil you might recommend? I’d love to have my home smell a bit fresher without introducing synthetic chemicals. Thanks!

    1. Hi Carol, thanks so much for your comment, great question we can all do with less chemicals in our life I agree. I would recommend using lemon essential oil. The fresh zestfulness of lemon will not only eliminate odors it will also provides healthy soothing benefits that will increase your energy levels. A quick and easy solution for you would be to put some baking soda in a dish (baking soda just loves to eat up odors) add 8-10 drops of your favorite smelling essential oil, give it a quick mix with a fork and place it somewhere in the room. If your have a clean empty spray bottle you can make up an air freshener by mixing water,vodka and essential oil. Why Vodka? It helps the oil to mix with the water and also increases the life of the scent. A tablespoon of vodka to every 6 tablespoons of water should be good. Once you have your water and vodka mix in your bottle add about 20 drops of your oil, you can experiment with this until you have the strength of scent you are happy with. You can spray this in your rooms, on your drapes and furniture, wherever you need it, just give it a shake before you spray. I hope you find these tips helpful and would love to hear how you get on 🙂

  4. I want to try the lemon oil and baking soda. Can I leave the vodka out? I don’t want a bottle of vodka lying around. I don’t drink it. And it doesn’t seem like it takes much vodka to make this room freshener. So that would leave a lot of left over vodka.

Hello Jeff, thanks for your comment, you don’t have to add vodka to the lemon and baking soda mix it’s fine as is, the vodka is really just for the spray mix but yes you can leave it out of that too if you wanted, it just helps the oil mix with the water and preserve the scent but it can be made without it, or just buy a miniature and use it all 🙂 you must come back and let me know how you got on, thanks again Jeff delighted to have you here 🙂
